Many alternative comedians have failed in their attempts to relocate from the comedy club to the small screen. Such as Marcus Brigstocke’s BBC Two series ‘The Savages’ or Lee Evans’ hugely disappointing ‘So What Now,’ to name but a few. But ‘Black Books’ stands alone as a true success story and a triumph for alternative comedy.
Dylan Moran and Bill Bailey once found themselves up against each other in the running for the much coveted Perrier comedy award in 1996, with Moran eventually snatching the award. But in the Channel Four series ‘Black Books’ Moran and Bailey line-up together with Tasmin Gregg as the leading roles in the sitcom.
The third series was touted as the final ever series of the show, that follows the employees of a London bookstore, ‘Black Books.’ The shop takes its name from its downbeat owner, Bernard...
