Laura (Judi Dench) was a bright woman who was a translator by trade was forced to go to a party by her sister Helen (Susan Penhaligon) and Helen's husband Phil (Richard Warwick.) Unbeknown to Laura the party is being used by Helen and Phil to set Laura up with the man they believe to be her Mr Right.

Mr Right, is called Mike Selway (Michael Williams), Mike is a landscape gardener but when the pair first meet it seems as if they have nothing in common, but just to fool Helen and Phil the pair attempt to find some conversation.

The show charts the gradual union of the pair as they are slowly drawn together before eventually they marry at the end of the fourth series.
