Marie Antoinette supposedly uttered the phrase ’Let Them Eat Cake’ when she heard of how the peasantry had no bread to eat in the lead up to the French Revolution. (Incidentally it has been disputed if it was actually her who first used this phrase.)

Scroll on a couple of hundred years and the phrase was coined as the title for a new French and Saunders vehicle that was set in the times of Antoinette, seven years prior to the French Revolution.

The British sitcom devised and written by Peter Learmouth had one series in 1999 and was mainly played out in the Palace of Versailles in 1792.

The series centred on the Comtesse de Vache, Colombine (Jennifer Saunders) one of the most hated women in the court of Louis XVI and not the brightest woman one could ever meet. She was however a personal friend to Louix XVI as well as Marie Antoinette. By her...
